3 Important Life Questions Kids Ask

Kids are thinkers, and they aren’t afraid to ask questions. As parents, grandparents, caretakers, and teachers, we need to be prepared to answer kids’ important questions. This is how they grow and how they begin to understand the world around them.

At Bible2School, there are three questions we hear most often from children — and they are deep life questions that all point to God’s Word! In this blog, we outline the three questions and unpack HOW to answer them in the best way for children.

“Where Did I Come From?”

This question goes to a higher level than the birds and the bees conversation. When asked this question, kids truly want to know WHERE they came from and how/why they were created. Answer with, “There is a God who made YOU. He knit you together in your Mom’s womb and designed you to be exactly the way you are. He loves you and you are so special in His eyes. He wants you to live your life for him.”

“What’s My Purpose?”

Teaching our kids to live their life with purpose is important in their developmental skills, as this can impact their dedication and outlook on many life situations, from chores to careers. Purpose is what motivates us! Tell them, “You were created for a specific purpose by God!” Reference the famous allegory of three bricklayers who are asked, “What are you doing?”

– The first says, “I am laying bricks.”

– The second says, “I am building a wall.”

– The third says, “I am building the house of God.”

All three men are doing the exact same thing, but they view it very differently. The first bricklayer has a task. The second has a career. The third has a calling or a meaningful purpose. Being able to see the end result and how their contribution has meaning is an important thing for children to grasp.

For older children, ask thoughtful questions to help inspire them to discover God’s purpose for their life, such as “How can you glorify God with the gifts, talents, and interests He has given you?”

“What Happens After I Die?”

If we’re honest, this is a question that even us as adults wonder about, isn’t it? The fact is we are all going to die someday. And it’s easy enough to understand what happens to our physical bodies, as we can observe the process of deterioration. But what happens to our souls? When discussing this with a child, focus on the gift of eternal life in heaven Christ offers us when we believe in Him. Revelation 21 offers some great descriptions of heaven that we can all look forward to, such as:

– There will be no more death

– No more tears

– No more sadness

– That it will shine with the glory of God and be beautiful

And will we be with God FOREVER there — that’s something to celebrate and look forward to together with a child.

Remember, kids ask questions because they are eager to learn. When it comes to important questions like these, our answers will help shape who they are for the rest of their lives. No pressure, right?!? Just do your best, keep it simple, and set a good example.
